The Riverdale Park Arts Council is proud to sponsor the GERALD KING FINE ARTS AWARD, named in honor of long time town resident, teacher and master realism artist, Gerald King. The grant award provides a unique opportunity for a local artist to study at his studio, ATELIER ROYALE. Malika Bryant of Hyattsville, Md., pictured below with Gerald King, was the first recipient of the award in 2012. "Gerald King was not only my teacher, I saw him as a friend. He was very straightforward when it came to his critiques. He was one of the very few "genuinely good people" out here. In a world where there is so much superficial bull, Gerald was very refreshing for my spirit. After completing my first painting of "Frida Kahlo " (below left) I entered it into Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commissions', first time ever employee arts exhibition. After a few weeks I was informed that my painting had sold. I said a prayer to Gerald thanking him. I have always known that I was an artist of dry media, and I had never delved into painting..until meeting Mr. King. I will be, forever grateful at having had the chance to know my Master Teacher Gerald King." Malika Bryant 2/19/2013
